Curly is a Straight Egyptian, so I named him KHNSU, which is the name of an Egyptian God. I called him Curly because his mane and tail were very curly when he was little.
31 KB Jpeg Curly is about 10 hours old here. His real momma didn't want to have anything to do with him; the only way she would even let him near was when I held her. For the first 36 hours of his life he knew no mother love. I would catch Roya every hour or so and hold her so Curly could nurse. When I was not around he stayed as far away from her as he could, to avoid being kicked or bitten.
70 KB Jpeg My other colt, Magic, was almost 6 months old now, so I weaned him in a hurry, waited a few hours until Jewel's bag was pretty full, and presented Curly to her. I was hoping she would accept him. I put a halter on her the first time, but I needn't have worried. Within 10 minutes Jewel was parading Curly around in front of the other horses, bragging about her new little baby boy. Here they are the next day. As you can see, Jewel gave Curly all the love he had been missing the first few hours of his life.
33 KB Jpeg Curly is trying a halter on for the first time. He is a little shy about it, and hiding behind his new Momma. He is 5 days old here.
49 KB Jpeg Two months old, and doing fine. I was a little worried about Jewel not having enough milk for him, but Curly absolutely refused milk supplements, so I let nature take it's course. She did splendidly with him.
48 KB Jpeg Another two months old picture.
38 KB Jpeg Curly is now three months old and beginning to show his true colors.
20 KB Jpeg At three months old, practicing to become a race horse, or maybe a cutting horse.
47 KB Jpeg Curly is one year old here, and still a Momma's boy.
56 KB Jpeg Two years old; begging carrots from his friend Andrea.
50 KB Jpeg Three years old now, and raiding the apricot trees with cousin Nina.
63 KB Jpeg At four years of age, Curly is still hanging around with Momma and cousin Nina.
59 KB Jpeg The four year old Curly showing off his profile.
68 KB Jpeg One of the very last pictures I took of Curly while he was still at home. June 1, 1996; four years old.
In the summer of 1996, I leased Curly out to a person I thought I could trust. For the better part of a year everything went well; I would drive the 1 1/2 hours up to Apple Valley to visit with Curly and his new family pretty often. Then, one time, when I drove up there, the family and the horses had disappeared without a trace! I thought for sure that my Curly was lost for good.
Then, a few weeks ago, February 23, 2003, a person I didn't know e-mailed me about a grey Arabian stallion she thought looked Egyptian, but nobody knew anything about this horse. His former owner had left him with a neighbor and then disappeared, never to return. The horse was rescued by another lady, who does dog and horse rescues in a small way. The rescue lady, Mary-Ann (Whispering Pines Dog Rescue and Adoption - 661-904-3649), felt a bit overwhelmed and contacted a friend, who contacted another friend, who is the lady who e-mailed me.
Seems like the person abandoning the horse had left a book with him, mentioning something to the effect that the horse's "heritage" was in that book. The book was one of the ones I do, and as they are all numbered, Diana, the e-mail lady, thought that POSSIBLY it could point to the owner of the horse, so it could be discovered just who the horse was and possibly the registration papers could be reunited with the horse. An extensive search of the internet found my web page with the books, at which time she contacted me. The book trail turned out to be no help, but after talking to Diana a few times, and gaining a few more snippets of info, I played a wild hunch and drove all the way up to see this horse for myself.
IT REALLY WAS CURLY!!!!!! More than 5 years later he was found!!!!!!!!! Of all the Arabians in California, the one Diana was asking me about was the one I had lost!!!!!!
I am eternally grateful to both Mary-Ann and Diana, without whom I would never have seen my Curly again.
68 KB Jpeg Curly at Mary-Ann's place, February 26, 2003; the day he was found again.
68 KB Jpeg Another picture of the lost and found at Mary-Ann's.
We brought Curly home last week, March 10, 2003. He is now in Shadow Hills, CA, at Austin Arabians, with my very good friend Garry Tindell, whom I have known for many many years. He will, at least for the time being, reside at Garry's place, and will stand at stud there. I cannot do him justice myself, so I am grateful that Garry, who has both the facilities and the experience, is willing to take Curly under his wing.
If anyone can put some meat on those bones of Curly's, it is Garry. He feeds VERY well!
Curly will have a live-in girlfriend, a German born Egyptian Related mare named *ISCHIRIA, who is closely related to both of Curly's granddams.
Garry will not abscond with the horse like the former person did; not only have I known Garry since 1970, but I have known his twin brother Jerry, his mother, and his other brother Duke all those years too. Duke has been my farrier since 1966.
